A Step-by-Step Guide to Playing the Japanese Version of Phantasy Star Online 2

Curious to try out the new free-to-download, free-to-play Phantasy Star Online 2, but don’t want to wait for the English localization? Luckily, the game doesn’t have any real measures in place to prevent foreign players from downloading, installing, or playing, so you can give the Japanese version a try right now.

Kotaku’s put together a terrific guide to getting the game running on your PC. I’ve listed the steps after the break, but they’ve got all kinds of fancy screencaps for those who need some help identifying those Japanese mouse buttons.

Part 1 — Downloading the Client

Step 1: Go to http://pso2.jp/
Step 2: Click on the blue hexagon button underneath the yellow SEGA ID hexagon on the left side of the screen.
Step 3: On the new page, click the picture of the space elf and the human to download the game client downloader.
Step 4: Double click on downloader.exe (the program you just downloaded).
Step 5: Choose a download location and click the bright blue button to start your 3.3 gig download.

Part 2 — Making a SEGA ID Account

Step 1: Go back to http://pso2.jp/
Step 2: Ok, time to create a SEGA ID account so you can log in to the game after the download is complete. Click the big yellow SEGA ID Button on the left side of the screen.
Step 3: A new window should open. In the blank box in the center, enter your email address.
