Shigesato Itoi Says Mother 4 is “Impossible”

There’s been quite a revival of interest in the EarthBound series (called Mother in Japan) in recent times. After years of petitions and requests, Nintendo of America is finally bringing EarthBound/Mother 2 to Virtual Console, and a dedicated group of fans has offered an English script of Mother 3 to Nintendo free of charge. With the cult classic RPG series seeing receiving more attention than it has in years, could we see a new game added to the franchise?

One of Itoi’s followers on Twitter asked the developer if he would consider creating Mother 4, but he was quickly shot down. Itoi answered with a rather blunt “Impossible,” and nothing more was said on the subject. It’s sad to see that a series that still has potential has no chance at revival, but at least EarthBound has a chance to see new life on the Wii U Virtual Console.

    Well, that escalated quickly!

This decision has nothing to do with Nintendo.

Is it not their decision to release (or not release) Mother 3 with the fan translation that has been offered to them, or Mother 1 which has already been officially translated (correct me if I’m wrong ’bout that, but I’m pretty sure it has been)?

      • Erimgard

That doesn’t have anything to do with a potential Mother 4 though.

        • Ghabulous Ghoti

I was mostly referring to the not releasing of Mother 3 that was mentioned in this article, though I really should have been clear about that in my initial comment, seeing as I said nothing to imply that’s what I was talking about.

Yeah, he’s told us that a few times. The question is, is Mother 3 in English possible?

So, since it’s HIS IP he has the rights over it, right? So it’s all up to HIM whether or not another MOTHER game gets made, whether it be by himself or another development team.

So it’s HIS call, unless he dies and then it would be up to whosoever inherits the rights to the IP… So this raises a question:

“Would mother fans KILL for a new MOTHER game?” …
