Sakurai: Mewtwo’s New Form May be Playable in Smash Bros.

Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai has been very tight-lipped throughout the entire development process of the new titles for Wii U and 3DS. The games were officially unveiled during Nintendo’s E3 direct, and a total of three new characters (Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, and Mega Man) have been confirmed for the game. According to a report from the Pokémon X and Pokémon Y Developer Roundtable at E3, Sakurai had a rare moment of openness in which he hinted at a new look for an old character.

Psychic Pokémon Mewtwo was a fan favorite in Super Smash Bros. Melee, but he was replaced with Lucario in Brawl. Now that Mewtwo is returning in a new form for Pokémon X and Y, Nintendo World Report’s Justin Berube decided to ask Pokémon Company CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara and Game Freak Director Junichi Masuda about the chances of Mewtwo’s new form appearing in the new Smash Bros. Games.

Berube reports that Ishihara and Masuda appeared surprised and hesitated before answering that they have no new information to offer regarding Mewtwo’s new form or its potential appearance at other games. Sakurai himself happened to be in the crowd during this Roundtable, and he reportedly shouted out “We are thinking about it.”

Would you like to see the return of Mewtwo to Smash Bros.? If so, would you prefer he appear in his original form, new form, or both? I’d personally enjoy seeing both forms playable in some way or another – perhaps he switches forms during his Final Smash, much like Samus – with different styles and movesets between the two.

So much yes!! I was already kinda expecting Mewthree to be in Smash 4, replacing Lucario.

    • Valhalen

I’d rather just having the original Mewtwo, not that thing.

  • Derek Johnson

    This would be quite Amazing!!!!

  • alsonic_ze_hedgehog

yes, yes, 1000 times yes. Even though I like Lucario for his unique ability (More damage= More strength) I want to start with something fresh.

  • Lord_Shadowhand

    Needs a zelda/sheik mechanic

    • Gabriel Gomez

Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes!

  • Julian Morales

I actually hated mewtwo in smash. It seemed like he had the low speed of a heavyweight but without the weight and power.

    • fuckyoudude

I agree, but I think the new form might change that.

      • KingDerpy

Same here. Hope they change his play-style to be a little less awkward.

  • Begclawmrf

He’s was always so much fun to just annoy my friends with disable and confusion, I would love to have him back. (Also, he just has items float around him, even when swinging a baseball bat, how cool is THAT?!)

EDIT: Also he’s floaty, but it works imo.

I’d love for Mewtwo to return even with his new form. Though I still really like playing as Lucario, maybe they don’t have to replace him but just add Mewtwo back along with Lucario? The only similarities in their movesets was the charge B attack. For the Pokemon roster I don’t only want 1st generation characters, have a variety to make it enjoyable for all fans.

  • Mr.Anonymous

As much as a Mewtwo fan I am, I think I’d like a new pokemon…

  • Ghabulous Ghoti

Hoping they leave Lucario in. He had such an interesting playstyle. Meanwhile, if you got into even mildly serious play, Mewtwo was completely useless.

  • Zach Gosselin

    Zoroark would be cool!

  • Keith Speidel

The new Mewtwo would be interesting. Instead of a possible replacement for Lucario they should simply remove Pichu.

    • KingDerpy

They already took em out in brawl, Pichu. Ohh what a bad idea that was.

  • KingDerpy

RAHG so many games comming out in Oct. I NEEDS THE MONEYS

  • Valhalen

What if Mewtwo is playable in both forms in the New Smash? Much like Zelda/Sheik transformation?

I thought at that point the roster was already decided….hmm I guess the roster isn’t as solid as I thought.
