Poll: How Do You Feel About Mega Evolutions in Pokémon X & Y?

The release of Pokémon X & Y will bring about a lot of changes to the beloved franchise. From going 3D (in every sense of the phrase) to adding in a new type (Fairy), the sixth generation is really looking to shake things up. Arguably the biggest new addition is the recently revealed ‘Mega Evolution‘ feature. Utilizing hold items called Mega Stones, certain Pokémon can evolve into their Mega form in battle, changing their stats and attacks and even their type.

We’ve head plenty of arguments both for and against this new feature, so we decided to put it to a vote and let you guys decide. Is Mega Evolution a great new addition to the Pokémon franchise, or is Game Freak making a mistake? Hit the jump and cast your vote!

Yay, I got the first vote :P (not that it matters much).

    • Julian Delarosa

I love the fact that we can literally say “some guy got the first vote”

  • Jason-William Glenister

i think its a great idea and adds in some diversity into a already evolving game, will spice up the current metgame as well and cant wait to see my shiny Mawile go into its megaform, should be awesum sauce:D

    • Gaseous Snake

Parks and Rec reference, now that is awesome sauce

  • Sabrina Nguyen

I like it, it’s something new, And I’m always accepting to try out new things. I like the concept and I already like a few of the choice Pokemon! (Absol, Blaziken, Mawile)
It’s only a temporary thing, so it’s not like it’s unchangeable or you have to do it, so i don’t see why there’d be any problems.

  • Lady Viridis

I’m not really into anything I’m seeing for Gen 6. Gen 5 didn’t wow me either. Probably a lot of people will like this, and it could be interesting, but… every time I see this photo all I can hear is the Digimon theme song playing in my head.

    • John Yost

honestly it’s more like going super saiyan in DBZ

      • MusubiKazesaru

I think I read that the whole “mega” thing in Digimon (never watched it) isn’t even “mega” in Japan so that’s probably more accurate.

    • Akatosh

Yeah, Digimon minus all the **** that the video games had.

  • MusubiKazesaru

I just dislike that only a select few will get this ability, it basically shuns tons of other Pokemon, if they do this with every fully evolved Pokemon, ok…but this limitation isn’t doing it for me. It has potential and who wouldn’t love a Mega Blastoise (Water/Steel) or a Mega Arcanine? I like the idea, but so far it seems unfair.

    • Akatosh

Really? I don’t think Absol had it fair in the first place. Now it’s getting a second chance.

  • Nome

It’s the only reason I want to buy the game actually

  • Tensei

I feel vindicated in liking Digimon more than Pokemon as a kid.

  • Karwan Kadir

I like that it’s making Pokemon once considered bad or mediocre, now a lot better by giving them boosted up stats, changing abilities and even their types. Gives them a chance to be used more often now. Like Mawile for example. Now Mawile can stand it’s ground against even dragon types. Plus these mega forms aren’t permanent, apparently only activated during a battle when holding a certain item. So it’s all optional.

  • Rolo Krisot

i wanted evolutions for the pokemon who never had any…. not super evolutions for choice pokemon in battle when they hold a certain object :/

  • BigHairyFart

This poll does not accurately portray my feelings about it. We know almost nothing about Mega-Evolutions. So far, I like what I see, but I want to know the specifics about it.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/FerguliosoFilms RestlessPoon

I have mixed feelings about it. While I like the concept, I think it’s pointless as it’s battle only. Not for battling, but for everything else. Also, this makes me fear that they’ll stop giving other Pokemon evolutions in favor of Mega evolutions. Overall, I’m neutral about it.

    • wooloochief

exactly. I would have personally preferred actual evolutions. But, as BigHairyFart said, we still need more information.

    • Akatosh

It’s pointless as it’s battle only… what do you do normally in your pokémon games? I was convinced this whole time battling was 99.99% of the game! O_O

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/FerguliosoFilms RestlessPoon

Well, there’s contests and just normally looking at your Pokemon when you’re not battling. If all you do is battle in the game, then you’re hardly playing it.

        • Akatosh

Pokémon for me is about training, battling, and exploration. While it would be, “nice,” to, “look,” at the Mega Forms, I think you’d see plenty of them in combat, plus I’ve always been a fan of form changing and “temporary” schemes.

  • Adam Bell

41% for ‘Love it!’? Seriously? God damn it I’m glad that I’ve still got my old school games on my ORIGNAL GBC with Yellow, Gold, and the TCG and all the GBA ones on my phone. This makes me sad. Not only are the ‘mega evolutions’ just slight modifications (with some exceptions such as mega mewtwo…) of the end evolution form, but its just downright lazy with the naming solution. You couldn’t come up with anything better? Mega Mewtwo? I would’ve taken something along the line of Mewthree or even Mewtri or something as stupid as Mewbi (it looks like a mewtwo/celebi cross honestly).

    • AliasAlterego

You’re right. I also am bitter, do not understand new things and come to hate everything that innovates in anything whatsoever for that fact.

      • EzikielofHyrule

You are right. I also cannot respect others peoples opions when they actually have legittimate reasons for them and have to be an a##hole and make sarcastic remarks about it for that fact.

    • phantasmagasm

Just wondering if it has registered with you that they didn’t fully rename them because it is NOT a full evolution only a temporary battle evolution. No point in giving it a new name if it is still the same pokemon for the majority of the time.

    • Akatosh

Mega Mewtwo is better then “Mewtwo’s Awakened Form”. And for goodness sakes genwunner. I love me some pokémon g/s/c, but the series needs to evolve.

      • EzikielofHyrule

Ha the irony of saying the series needs to evolve is great

        • Akatosh

It needs to really… I LOVE the core mechanics behind pokémon, and they should not be changed, but what GF needs to do is stuff like Mega Evolution – keep the old mechanics and just layer tons of stuff over the top.

And I’m glad some people got it. ;)

  • nikuchan

Mega evolution? I wasn’t aware that Pokemon Digivolve.

    • Akatosh

There are actually several digimon developers on the pokémon team (if I’ve heard correctly), explaining fusion and “mega” evolution.

  • K2L

I choose undecided because I haven’t even played a Pokémon game to begin with.

  • Megan Gregory

I love ittttt, spices up things! Mega Blaziken looks bad ass! So hyped up for X & Y!!!!

  • Sebastian Perry

I don’t like the idea of it at all…. it’s just like baby Pokemon. I didn’t like those either.

  • JokƏr Ȣȣ

This is out of their boundaries. They need to leave stuff like this as well as the more complicated to where they belong – Digimon.

    • Akatosh

Digimon is complicated? Whatever. I’m going to do some RNG abuse on my B/W cartridge, so I can EV train a perfect pokémon that keeps momentum on a balanced team while tanking, setting up entry effects, spreading status, supporting and possibly scouting.

Digimon Masters Online ~ We done grinding yet?

  • BlackRaven6695

Tough to say so early on. They certainly look cool but we don’t know how often you’ll see Mega Evolutions during gameplay or how much of an effect it will have on gameplay. I mean, Gen V had Triple and Rotation battles but they cropped up only a few times in the whole game and there was barely any time to take them in.

    • Akatosh

HOWEVER, if you fight competitively, people double battle all the time. If enough pokémon have Mega Stones, I imagine it will heavily impact the gameplay, especially since it’s already confirmed mega evolution will have presence within the storyline (refer to details known about Shalour City and the Tower of Mastery).

      • BlackRaven6695

No doubt it will affect the metagame. Gen V was one big struggle for weather and I predict Gen VI to revolve around Mega Evolution. It is reassuring to know there are in-game areas will make reference to Mega Evolution but from what I know Mega Stones (or at least Blaziken’s one) won’t be available in normal gameplay.

        • Akatosh

I believe the Blazikenite is the only one known for sure to not be found in the actual game, however I remember hearing that normal Mega Stones will be found throughout Kalos.

  • Jack Veras Lara

I have only one thing to say.

If Arcanine gets this “Mega” thing, it is already a pretty furry Pokemon. If he gets more, things will get serious. hahahah

  • Seth McCloud

I see some potential, but don’t allow every Pokemon to have this, or the entire Pokemon franchise might go down in ruins. For starters, DON’T GIVE IT TO THE STARTER POKEMON! Also, stay away from the legendaries with this as well. They are strong enough, we don’t need to go overboard with this. Try giving to to the Pokemon that don’t evolve, that way, if it doesn’t work, you don’t loose everyone playing Pokemon.

  • Zoey Steele

Yes to Mawile and Absol, because those pokemon are favorites of mine and I’d like them to be strong enough to take on the more powerful pokemon.
HELL NO to Blaziken! Blaziken is one of the most overpowered pokemon already with highest base attack stat out of every starter type. He does not need to get stronger.
Also, it’s a little silly to give mega evolution to legendaries. And lol, Mega Ampharos looks like Fabio X3

  • Zoey Steele

Where’s Mega Farfetch’d by the way?
